Is Bashar al-Assad under house arrest? Where is the Syrian president now? Latest news from Syria, November 30
As opposition forces advance in Syria, the whereabouts of President Bashar al-Assad are increasingly the subject of speculation and controversy.
'Assad remains in Moscow'
Director of the Middle East Institute Charles Lister said:
'Well-informed sources say Assad remains in Moscow, while much of his family and close allies are also abroad in Russia and the UAE. This adds a stunning additional dimension to the collapse of northern Syria.'
Conflicting reports on Assad's whereabouts
Some sources report that Bashar al-Assad may have left Moscow for Syria on November 30.
A Russian Il-62M aircraft belonging to the Russian Air Force landed in Damascus. Assad is believed to have been on board. However, other sources claim that the plane was carrying military advisers and Russian soldiers.
Anonymous sources on social media also point to the Assad family being outside of Syria. One such source wrote:
“Bashar al-Assad, his wife and children are in Russia. That’s for sure. Asma al-Assad’s brothers and their families are also outside of Syria: Iyad has always been abroad, Firas is now in the UAE, and her parents are in London. Asma left Damascus on Wednesday evening, taking her personal support team with her, including Milad. The next few days will tell…”
In addition, according to opposition media outlet Syria TV, Assad returned to Damascus two hours ago, causing concern among regime supporters.
Rumors of a coup
Turkish journalist Ragip Soylu, citing Sham Network, reports on possible plans by senior officers of the Syrian army for a coup. "Some military officers are trying to seize control of the government in response to the rapid advance of the rebels beyond Hama," the source notes.
Security expert Ruslan Trad added:
"The situation in Syria is becoming increasingly unstable. There are reports of fighting in Damascus between the Republican Guard and Maher al-Assad's Fourth Division. If Maher takes over the regime, a powerful military campaign can be expected to recapture the captured territories."
Meanwhile, more and more reports confirm armed clashes in Damascus between the Syrian Arab Army and pro-government militias.
