As the editorial board of Caliber.Az learned from verified government sources, according to preliminary results of the investigation, it was established that the Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) plane, flying from Baku to Grozny, was attacked by the Russian Pantsir-S air defense system while approaching Grozny. In addition, due to the use of electronic warfare systems by Russian troops, communication with the Azerbaijani plane was completely disrupted, which caused it to disappear from radars in Russian airspace. The plane was only found again in the Caspian Sea.

Russian sources report that during the flight over Chechen territory, Russian air defense forces attempted to shoot down Ukrainian UAVs. The head of the Security Council of the Chechen Republic, Khamzat Kadyrov, confirmed the fact of the drone attack on Grozny on the morning of December 25, while emphasizing that there were no casualties or damage. In this regard, the Russian side was supposed to close its airspace to civilian aircraft, which, however, did not happen. The question of why a no-fly zone was not declared over Chechnya remains open.

The Grozny airport refused to accept the plane, and similar decisions were made at the airports of Makhachkala and Mineralnye Vody. The disoriented crew, exposed to air defense and electronic warfare systems, was forced to fly to the Kazakh city of Aktau. It can be assumed that this was done on purpose: so that the plane would fall into the Caspian Sea, which would lead to the death of all witnesses and the sinking of the plane. However, this is only a hypothesis.

Alternative versions disseminated by Russian media may be attempts to mislead the public. Video recordings from the plane's cabin confirm that two passengers were injured by shrapnel. All evidence, including the sounds of explosions heard by passengers, points to the work of air defense.

For the Azerbaijani side participating in the investigation, the situation is completely clear. Although no one claims that this was done intentionally, Baku expects the Russian side to admit the fact of the downing of the Azerbaijani plane, to officially apologize to the people of Azerbaijan and to conduct a thorough investigation, as a result of which all those responsible will be brought to justice.
