Elon Musk may have performed a gesture reminiscent of the "Bellamy salute," a ritual that originated in the late 19th century as part of the Pledge of Allegiance to the US flag.

First proposed by Francis Bellamy on October 12, 1892, on Columbus Day, the gesture involves standing at attention, then raising the right arm to the chest and sharply extending it forward, pointing it toward the flag.

The ritual was widely used, in particular, among scout organizations, but later became associated with the Nazi salute, as their visual similarity caused confusion. For this reason, in 1942, the "Bellamy salute" was replaced in the United States with placing the right hand over the heart during the Pledge of Allegiance.

In terms of Musk's gesture, he does not appear to have performed key elements of the ritual. For example, there was no pledge of allegiance to the flag, as required by tradition. This may indicate that his actions were either spontaneous or had nothing to do with the "Bellamy salute."

What exactly Musk meant by his gesture remains unclear. He himself claims that his strange gesture means "my heart belongs to you."
