"Millimeter Miracle" and "Let Freedom Ring": Who is Pastor Lorenzo Sewell? Sewell's Speech at Trump's Inauguration (VIDEO)
Today, Trump's inauguration is the central topic in all the media, and understandably so.
But during this inauguration, many people gave speeches behind the podium in the Capitol rotunda, away from the "arctic cold" of as much as -5 degrees Celsius that literally paralyzed Washington.
We don't know who has a favorite at this ceremony, but my favorite is a black pastor from Detroit, Michigan. His name is Lorenzo Sewell.
Just listen to the music of his speech:
Let us pray for our 47th president. Heavenly Father, we are so grateful that You gave our 45th and now our 47th president a miracle. We are grateful that You are the one who has called him for such a time as this, so that America would begin to dream again.
We pray that we would fulfill the true meaning of our creed: that we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. We pray that You use our president so that we may live in a nation where we will not be judged by the color of our skin but by the content of our character.
Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus, we are so grateful today that You will use our 47th president so that we may sing with new meaning:
"My country, 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountainside, let freedom ring."
And because America is called to be a great nation, we believe that You will make this come true. So let freedom ring from the precious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania. Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado. Let freedom ring from the curvaceous hilltops of California.
But God, we are asking You not only for that. Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia. Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee. Let freedom ring from every hill and every molehill in Mississippi, from every state, every city, every village, and every hamlet.
And when we let freedom ring, we will be able to speed up that day when all Your children—Black men and white men, Protestant and Catholic, Jew and Gentile—will be able to sing in the meaning of that old Negro spiritual:
"Free at last! Free at last!
Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"
If you believe that where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty, come on, put your hands together and give your great God great glory!
It's no wonder Michigan media is reporting that Rev. Sewell helped Trump "win Michigan." The former drug dealer became a rock star after "finding Jesus."
Rev. Lorenzo Sewell, senior pastor of 180 Church in Detroit, was chosen to deliver one of four prayers of blessing at Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20 in Washington, D.C. The choice was not only a great honor for him, but also an event with deep personal and historical significance.
Rev. Sewell himself describes his past as complicated. He previously described himself as a “street pharmacist” and drug dealer until he had a “powerful experience with Jesus” that changed his life and led him to offer a prayer at the momentous ceremony.
In an interview with Fox News, he shared his thoughts on the combination of religion and politics:“We genuinely believe that being a Bible-believing Christian and a Democrat is very difficult. Of course, there are Democrats in my church. We don’t think every Democrat is a demon, but we do believe that the Democratic platform is demonic.”
Sewell grew up on Detroit’s east side and had a difficult childhood, calling himself a “street kid.” He told the BBC: 'I was taught how to live by murderers, my father is currently serving time for murder.' His school years were particularly difficult: his father's arrest and the death of his younger brother pushed him into a world of drugs and gangs.
However, in his final year, he had a spiritual awakening that changed his whole life. Twenty years later, he became the senior pastor of a local church and then led an evangelistic ministry in Detroit.
Today, in blessing President Trump, Sewell said: "For a guy like me to be able to pray for our president and, frankly, the world, is proof that Dr. King's dream is coming true. I believe that our country can see that God can do anything: take someone who was considered trash and turn them into treasure."
Reverend Sewell was one of several religious leaders from different faiths who gave a blessing after the inauguration address, including a Catholic priest, a Jewish rabbi and a Muslim imam.
Sewell's participation is especially significant this year because the inauguration coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Reflecting on the occasion, he told MLive, "For me, the inauguration blessing is very much about King's dream, and the fulfillment of that dream."
The reverend emphasized that his prayer at the ceremony is the realization of King's vision."The fact that I, a man with such a background, was entrusted to pray for the 47th president is, of course, the fulfillment of King's dream," he noted.
The famous Martin Luther King's 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech was about racial equality and justice, where people would be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Sewell's participation in Donald Trump's inauguration underscores a personal connection to that dream of unity.
