The owner of the sanctuary told El Mundo that several tourists and about 10 employees were present at the center that day, accompanying the elephants while they were bathing. The attack happened unexpectedly, and no one was hurt except Garcia.

Experts attribute the animal's behavior to stress caused by constant contact with tourists and captivity. Despite the center's claims of "ethical treatment" of animals and refusal to use hooks, elephant attacks on tourists in Thailand do occur.
