Syria News December 1: Rebels in Hama, Russian Air Force Bombs Idlib, Assad Ready for Talks with Turkey
According to available information, Bashar al-Assad has expressed his intention to start negotiations with Turkey, asking Iraq to act as a mediator. However, as of November 30, Iraq has not responded to Syria's request, according to sources on the opposition television channel Syria TV.
Assad is interested in normalizing relations with Turkey, which in turn supports Syrian rebel groups operating along Syria's northern border. Turkey has also repeatedly stated its intention to improve relations with the government of Bashar al-Assad, despite its previous support for the opposition.
Amid these political efforts, active hostilities continue in Syria. In particular, opposition forces reported that they had captured territory in the northern city of Hama and the national airport in Aleppo. The rebels say they are preparing to repel air attacks from the Syrian and Russian military.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will also visit Damascus to express support for the Syrian government and army, before heading to Turkey. It underscores the ongoing diplomatic activity in the region, where talks and attempts to normalize relations are underway at various levels among key players in the Syrian conflict.
In terms of military action, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), one of the main rebel groups, continues its offensive in Aleppo, capturing important strategic sites. They claim to have captured the Aleppo Military Academy and seized a significant amount of Russian weapons, including Pantsir-S1 air defense missile systems, Uragan MLRS, tanks and other combat vehicles.
Meanwhile, Russian and Syrian aircraft struck the rebel-held city of Idlib on Sunday. This is the second day of intensive bombing in northern Syria aimed at dislodging rebels who have broken through to the city of Aleppo, Syrian army sources said.
One of the raids hit a densely populated residential area in the center of Idlib, the largest city in the rebel enclave near the Turkish border, where some four million people live in makeshift tents and shelters, according to local residents.
So despite attempts to start negotiations, the situation in Syria remains tense, with intense fighting and cautious diplomacy trying to find a way to resolve the conflict.
